The Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux Joins Green Marine Europe as a Port Authority: A Continuity of Commitment Aligned with Its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan

May 14, 2026

Green Marine Europe continues the deployment of its port framework with the participation of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux, already engaged in the program as a shipowner through its dredging activities.

A Major Estuarine Port with Strategic National Importance

Ranked among France’s leading seaports, the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux benefits from a strategic location at the heart of the Atlantic coast. The port operates seven terminals spread along the Gironde estuary and the Garonne River over more than 100 kilometres.

A Continuity of Commitment within the Green Marine Europe Program

Since 2024, the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux has participated in the Green Marine Europe program as a shipowner, with two dredging vessels engaged in the certification process.

Its participation in the framework as a port authority is part of this ongoing commitment, extending the structuring of its environmental performance to all of its activities, in line with its 2026–2030 strategic plan.

Following active involvement in the adaptation work carried out on the port framework, the GPMB aims to further strengthen its commitments to reducing its overall environmental footprint. By joining Green Marine Europe as a port authority, the Port of Bordeaux will be able to further demonstrate and structure its efforts to reduce environmental impacts and support the development of a more sustainable port model with practices that are more respectful of the environment and biodiversity.

Port Challenges at the Intersection of Estuarine and Industrial Dynamics

At the crossroads of estuarine ecosystems, industrial activities and port logistics, the Port of Bordeaux faces complex challenges: maintaining navigation conditions, managing environmental impacts and adapting infrastructure.

In this context, the EU Ports Strategy highlights the central role of ports in the transition of the maritime sector.

The Green Marine Europe framework provides a structured approach for addressing these challenges, based on performance indicators and continuous improvement.

A Structured Regional Dynamic in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux is a member of Aquitania Ports Link, alongside the ports of La Rochelle, Bayonne and Charente Atlantique (manager of the commercial port of Rochefort / Tonnay-Charente), an initiative supported by the Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, a supporter of Green Marine Europe.

This regional dynamic aims to strengthen the visibility and structuring of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine port offering in a context of evolving logistics chains and growing environmental expectations.

The participation of the Port of Bordeaux in the framework as a port authority therefore complements an already active involvement in the programme and further reinforces the territorial anchoring of Green Marine Europe, whose headquarters are located in Bordeaux.
