The Institut océanographique Paul Ricard supports Green Marine Europe

July 29, 2024

The Institut océanographique Paul Ricard has been working for almost 60 years to protect oceans, climate and biodiversity. It is a corporate scientific philanthropy initiative of the Pernod Ricard Group, which works to "know and protect the sea" through research programs and conservation actions. It operates on the model of public-private-philanthropic partnerships (PPPP) thanks to scientific patronage.

Its research focuses on ecological restoration, the study and protection of ecosystems, sustainable innovation for resource exploitation, and the observation of the impacts of climate change on marine biodiversity. Its teams run skills transfer programs in the field of sustainability science and have developed a research and training platform in marine biology, aquaculture and sustainable innovation. This enables the institute to strengthen the transfer of skills on sustainability issues for marine activities.

The institute regards the environmental commitment of companies as fundamental and emphasizes the urgency of the maritime industry taking actions to reduce the impact of its activities. At the heart of the institute’s mission lies the development of collective awareness around ocean conservation through the promotion of an open dialogue among all economic, scientific, institutional and association stakeholders forming part of a “magic square.” The institute regards such collaboration as the only way that the maritime industry will be able to face the challenges that lie ahead.

“Joining Green Marine Europe is a concrete way of showing support to the environmental transition of the maritime industry, through the development of a comprehensive certification program,” says Patricia Ricard, president of the Institut Océanographique Paul Ricard.

“Establishing collaborations with various stakeholders around a shared project will enable the improvement of their environmental performance and help to meet key sustainability challenges,” she adds. “The ocean is a global common good of humanity, under the responsibility of each and every one of us, let’s join forces to protect it.”
