Tethys Research Institute becomes a supporter of Green Marine Europe

September 17, 2025

Green Marine Europe is pleased to welcome the Tethys Research Institute among its supporters.

Founded in 1986, Tethys is a non-profit research organisation dedicated to conserving marine biodiversity through scientific research, education, and public engagement. Over nearly four decades, the institute has built one of the most comprehensive datasets on Mediterranean cetaceans and other large marine vertebrates, while also contributing to the establishment of the Pelagos Sanctuary for the Conservation of Mediterranean Marine Mammals.

By joining Green Marine Europe as a supporter, Tethys reaffirms its mission to promote sustainable interactions between human activities and marine ecosystems, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, where its work has long been rooted.

“We believe that constructive dialogue and shared commitment between the shipping industry, research institutions, and civil society are essential to achieving meaningful progress for marine life and healthy oceans. Tethys is proud to endorse Green Marine Europe and looks forward to contributing to its collective objectives,” stated Simone Panigada, President of the Tethys Research Institute.

This collaboration also resonates with the Pelagos Consortium, supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and coordinated by Tethys. Green Marine Europe is proud to be part of this international initiative, which aims to strengthen the conservation of cetaceans and their habitats within the Pelagos Sanctuary through enhanced cross-border cooperation, innovative science-based approaches, greater stakeholder involvement, and reinforced political action.

Launched in Nice during the UNOC3 conference, the Consortium brings together thirteen international partners from research, civil society, public institutions, and local authorities, all working together to ensure the long-term protection of the Sanctuary.

The support of renowned research institutions such as Tethys, combined with multi-stakeholder cooperation through initiatives like the Pelagos Consortium, strengthens Green Marine Europe’s ambition to foster collaboration across sectors to reduce maritime activities' environmental footprint and protect marine biodiversity for future generations.
