Share The Ocean joins Green Marine Europe as a supporter

January 14, 2026

Green Marine Europe (GME) announces the joining of Share The Ocean as a supporter of its environmental certification, thereby strengthening the role of biodiversity and operational science within the European maritime ecosystem.

A scientific project at the crossroads of disciplines

Share The Ocean is an interdisciplinary research program aimed at reducing collisions between vessels and marine megafauna. The project is based on close collaboration between:

  • BAÑULSDESIGN, a naval architecture and maritime engineering firm,

  • PLATON, an INRIA project team (CMAP – École polytechnique / CNRS),

  • the Pelagis Observatory (CNRS – La Rochelle University), a European reference for the study of marine mammals.

This transdisciplinary approach brings together biological knowledge, advanced mathematical modeling, and legal frameworks to address an environmental issue that is still insufficiently tackled through a systemic lens.

From scientific knowledge to decision support

Share The Ocean’s work is structured around three main pillars:

  • improving knowledge of marine megafauna distribution at a global scale through species distribution models;

  • quantifying collision risk using mathematical models that estimate encounters between vessels and animals, based on high-fidelity weather routing;

  • developing decision-support tools to identify high-risk areas and formulate operational recommendations, particularly regarding protection zones.

An innovative demonstrator: offshore racing

The project uses offshore sailing as a testing ground, combining technological innovation, real-world navigation constraints, and the production of scientific data. This approach makes it possible to test practical solutions before deploying them at a larger scale.

Toward application across global maritime traffic

By 2026, Share The Ocean aims to extend its applications to global maritime traffic, with a clear objective: to contribute measurably to reducing collisions at sea and protecting marine biodiversity, in line with European regulatory and environmental dynamics.

By joining Green Marine Europe as a supporter, Share The Ocean reaffirms its commitment to engaging with shipowners, shipyards, ports, and all maritime stakeholders involved in an environmental transition grounded in science, data, and operational action.
