Green Marine Europe (GME) is proud to announce the Turkish Shipbuilders' Association (GISBIR) 's official support for its environmental certification program. This strategic support reinforces the shared commitment to decarbonising the European shipbuilding industry and highlights the importance of international collaboration in achieving ambitious sustainability goals.
Founded in 1971 in Istanbul, GISBIR is one of Turkey's oldest non-governmental organisations, representing the majority of Turkish shipyards. With nearly 100 members, the association plays a central role in developing the Turkish shipbuilding industry by promoting innovation, digitalisation, decarbonisation and training. GISBIR is actively involved in European projects such as H2020 (Horizon 2020 - EU funding programme for research and innovation) and IPA (Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance) and is a member of international platforms such as Waterborne TP, SEA Europe and the ASEF Council (Active Shipbuilding Experts’ Federation).
GISBIR's support for GME illustrates the importance of national actors' commitment to European initiatives to accelerate the ecological transition of the maritime sector. By joining forces, GISBIR and GME demonstrate that international cooperation is essential to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices in the shipbuilding industry.
GISBIR's support for GME is also an encouraging sign for the CirclesOfLife project, a European Horizon Europe Fund initiative aimed at developing tools to assess and improve the environmental performance of European shipyards. As an active member of the CirclesOfLife consortium, GME is contributing to creating the Shipyard Environmental Performance Indicator (SEPI) and the Ship Circularity Passport, strengthening the industry's commitment to more sustainable practices.
