CMA CGM: Operational Feedback on Cetacean Protection

In line with the principles of the Green Marine Europe certification program and the sustainable use of the oceans, the CMA CGM Group is committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations, particularly their impact on marine mammals, which are highly exposed to the risks of ship strikes and underwater noise.

Recognising that ship strikes are the leading cause of non-natural mortality among large cetaceans (according to WWF), the Group is implementing concrete measures to reduce these impacts. In the Mediterranean, the waters off the Peloponnese and Crete are home to a particularly vulnerable population of sperm whales, currently estimated at around 200 individuals. These waters, which are essential for feeding, breeding and calving, are also subject to intense maritime traffic.

Against this backdrop, the Group has chosen to reroute its vessels to avoid the Hellenic Trench, thereby reducing the risk of collisions and avoiding this sensitive habitat. This decision, taken in collaboration with several internal departments, including the Fleet Navigation Centre, Shipping Lines and CSR teams, was supported by the expertise of specialist organisations such as OceanCare and IFAW.

In addition, with the support of its Fleet Navigation Centre and whenever operationally feasible, the Group adjusts vessel speeds to reduce risks within cetacean sanctuaries and other sensitive marine areas around the world.

These concrete actions contribute in particular to meeting the Level 2 requirements of Green Marine Europe's Underwater Noise performance indicator.
